“ For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Mathew 6:21 ESV
Taken out of context, this verse can justify all kinds of worldly treasures based on the self generated desires in your heart. Let’s look at the verses just before verse 21.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Mathew 6:19-20
Then the focus centers on the question that I, perhaps you, ask – What are treasures in heaven?
Well, they are not things that naturally deteriorate or are destroyed by nature. They are not things we might build or buy, things that someone else desires enough to steal for their own purposes.
So what is it about treasures in heaven that is so different and is vital to how we live our lives, our future, our hope? What awaits you in heaven?
First of all, without doubt the greatest, Jesus. In addition to that, we no longer die, are sick, or have pain. Our natural bodies cease to do the natural deterioration those who are aging recognize because we will have new bodies. There are no tears, no heartache, no fighting … sounds good to me. We find abundant joy instead of fear and anxiety. Family and friends who are believers and who have submited to the Lordship of Christ, are there with us. We have jobs God has prepared us for in this world to carry out in heaven. One thing it is not, it is not a bunch of clouds where we float around flapping our wings. We do not, ever, anyone, become angels. Angels, like us, are beings created by God. (Angels, another interesting area of discussion for another time.) Jesus told us he was going to build us homes, and I look forward to seeing if I get that log cabin I sometimes dream about. I also sometimes wonder what job this life of variety I’ve experienced will lead me to.
Having stuff is not a bad thing. But making stuff, or even people, important above anything else, is not the treasure the scripture talks about. God has given us all the desires of our hearts, with the purpose of each and every one to lead to His Perfect Will, seeing that others make it to heaven.
Not everyone has the same role in accomplishing that. Some are great preachers. Some are great teachers. Some are tremendous helpers with kind and generous hearts. We are a family, likened to a body with different parts. Each with a different gifts and jobs to do.
And today, you’ve had another example of me taking a few scriptures and breaking them down for my own clarification as much as for anyone else.
