He made the storm be still,
and the waves of the sea were hushed.”
Psalm 107:29 (ESV)

We all have troubles, severe enough at times to think of them as storms. But God has given us promises for guidance, protection, and even companionship during those storms.

As the above verse stated, he stilled the storm and calmed the waves. If we can turn to him in times like that, we will see what the disciples saw as shared in Luke.

As they sailed, he (Jesus) fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” Luke 8:23-25

The disciples were in real danger. They were frightened, so they turned to Jesus for help. Jesus immediately addressed the problem but asked them, “Where is your faith?” They had tremendous doubt, but they went beyond that doubt and fear and sought help from Jesus. His question, though some might see it as a rebuke, reads to me as a reminder that God is in control of all things at all times, and we may not see His plan, but He knows what He’s doing. Being the practical person I can be, I would ask, how could the disciples believe they were going to die if Jesus was there with them on the boat? A question we all face is, do we believe Jesus is on the boat with us in our storm? Seeing the miracle Jesus performed not only frightened them but amazed them and led them to seek and understand more fully Jesus as God.

It reminds us, reminds me, that God is faithful and that He wants our trust, our faith, no matter what might happen. Doubt can be real and powerful. Jesus is as real and more powerful. Trust that reality.

It may not seem like a post on worship, but it embraces the reality that Worship is far more than singing. It is believing, trusting, and persevering in this journey we’ve been given.

I don’t have a history on the song I’m going to share, except that I first heard it during a very, very tough time in my life, and it became my song of encouragement as I faced my storms.

Quote of the week

Ephesians 5:1-2 (World English Bible)

Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.
