Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,  making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.  And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,  addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,  giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,  submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:15-21 (ESV)

I’ve highlighted the verse on singing, but the entire set of scriptures is important. It shows how our singing of hymns, spiritual songs, and psalms is all a way to thank God for all He has done and, in reverence to our Savior, submit to one another. It is a sharing of our hearts. It doesn’t mean you have to be musically inclined. It means love resides in your heart, overflows, and you make melody however you can.

We are to use wisdom, continually seek God for a refreshing from His Holy Spirit, and communicate in these evil days. Scripture says to make the best use of our time. Something to meditate on and take steps as God leads.

When I used to write songs, I did some choruses, but mostly, the favorite format was more like hymns. A simple layman’s definition is that a chorus is more repetitious, involves more scripture quotes, and does not follow the verse-chorus format. A hymn, originally psalms put to music, is poetically written, tells a story, and has several verses in metered format.

I’ve included a video explaining how one of my favorite hymns came to be. Not a classic, older hymn. It’s more modern but written in a hymn format.

Quote of the week

Ephesians 5:1-2 (World English Bible)

Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.
